Rebuilding After the December 2024 Core Update

Rebuilding After the December 2024 Core Update

Our client in the finance sector lost 43% of their organic traffic overnight when Google rolled out the December 2024 core update. The typical advice didn't apply here because their content quality was solid and their backlink profile clean.

We spent two weeks analyzing which pages got hit hardest. Turned out Google had shifted its interpretation of E-E-A-T for financial topics. Pages written by staff writers without credentials were buried, while competitor content from certified financial planners ranked higher, even with weaker technical SEO.

The fix required restructuring their author system entirely. We brought in three CFPs as contributing authors and redistributed bylines across 200+ articles. Each author page needed detailed credentials, not just a name and photo.

Within six weeks, traffic recovered to 89% of pre-update levels. The interesting part was watching which pages bounced back first. Product comparison articles recovered fastest, while broader educational content took longer, suggesting Google weighted author expertise differently based on search intent.

The whole experience showed how core updates can completely change ranking factors for specific niches without warning.
